With scheduled charging, you can choose when your charger should charge your car, typically at times when electricity is cheaper, such as at night. This can both reduce your costs and contribute to more sustainable energy consumption.
This article explains how smart charging works and how to set it up in the app.
Why use smart charging?
Electricity is cheaper outside peak hours
A larger share of energy comes from renewable sources (e.g. wind power)
It’s good for the environment while also benefiting your personal finances
How does smart charging work?
Based on your preferred charging duration, schedule timeframe and daily electricity prices, we will automatically allocate the charging windows to the cheapest 15-min intervals.
How to set up Smart charging:
- Go to your Home tab in the app
- Scroll down to Smart charging (formerly known as Scheduled charging) and toggle it On. If you have scheduled charging enabled already, just tap on the existing schedule
- Select Lowest price in the schedule preferences
- Select when the charging is allowed to start the earliest and when the vehicle should be ready (e.g. 00.00-07.00)
- Use the slider to select how many hours you would like to charge (e.g. 3h 15m)
- Save settings
Next time when you plug in your vehicle, we will automatically create a schedule based on the intervals with the cheapest electricity prices and how many hours you want to charge in the given timeframe.
Important:
Smart charging must be set before connecting the car to the charger. If the car is already connected, the settings will only apply the next time the car is plugged in.
If your plans change and you need to charge immediately, you will be able to override the schedule by pressing Charge now and your vehicle will charge until it’s unplugged or when it reaches its battery limit.
Be aware of the Ask for authentication feature
If you have the Ask for authentication feature enabled, you must still start the charging session via the app or by scanning your charge key when the car is connected.
The charger will then wait and start charging within the cheapest hours.
If there’s no price information available, does my vehicle still charge?
- Yes, the charging window will be scheduled in the end of your schedule timeframe. Once we have the price information, the optimised schedule will be updated and we will charge when it’s cheapest
What chargers can use the smart charging feature?
Currently, these are the most used chargers on our platform that support this:
- Zaptec GO.
- Easee Home.
Technical requirements for smart charging:
- Chargers that do not support OCPP communications (or that do not support power delivery suspension/resumption) cannot be assigned a smart charging schedule.
